Nice idea. I see two ways of doing this...

    1) Add "sort by" in the Albums list and include a function to sort by date of bliss's last change to an album, possibly also with a further refinement to sort by date of cover change, file rename, genre rename etc

    2) Add a filter to the Activity page to only show where a fix has been made (http://ideas.blisshq.com/forums/21939-bliss/suggestions/2358119-make-it-easier-to-see-what-has-been-fixed) and also allow that to be filtered by the type of change (this is already ordered by date).

You could use "Fix all visible" to at least make this a lot quicker - http://www.blisshq.com/music-library-management-blog/2015/06/02/new-release-20150522/

Yeah, that's a nice idea Jacques... Could have it as a multi choice response - change to X, change all Y albums to X...

There's no automatic genre re-assignment yet. Genre consolidation is a fairly new area of the product. The normal approach is to get it working reliably and accurately, and then automate it.

However, I can certainly look at doing this soon.

Hi - if you assign more memory to bliss then the maximum art size should also be raised. To increasing to 512MB - http://www.blisshq.com/support/faq/general/assign-more-memory.html

Where would you like to see this, on the album page?

What is the reason you need to open it in MP3Tag - there are lots of reasons I know, but I'd like bliss to cover them :)

Yes, nice idea. I'd like to add a per-album tags page too but a folder and multi sub folder filter also has its uses.

Hi Harry, could you send a debug archive to us as suggested at http://www.blisshq.com/support/reporting-problems.html ? That way we can see what is going in inside your installation. Thanks for posting!

I actually looked at this a while ago. There were two main issues I had with it at the time:

    - Support for the back button. If the list is scrolled through to "Z" and that item is chosen, then 'back' is pressed, the list has to be fully loaded before scrolled through, and the delay tends to be a pain

    - Memory use. We have to deal with arbitrarily sized music collections of 10s of 1000s of albums. How much browser memory would be used by scrolling through such a list?

Maybe frameworks have come on a bit in that time.

What is the main issue with the current pagination approach?

I'm guessing then, you are copying files into your music library, then pressing "rescan"?

You shouldn't have to press rescan. It may take a short time, but the new files should show up in your music library, and only those files will be audited. If that doesn't work it's a bug. Also, the "Play" button needs to be pressed.

In some cases this might not work: e.g. on OS X, if you copy the files into the music library using a different computer it won't work. This is a limitation of the OS X file notification API.

It would be great to be able to specify more complex rules for allowing multiple pieces of artwork, while maintaining simplicity for the more common cases.

The UI in bliss is in a WAR file, it's just that bliss packages a web server inside it, rather than the other way around.

In theory it's probably possible, but I think would be a lot of effort.

I just wanted to add another thought that sprang to mind...

bliss, in theory, already has the ability to do this. The "album name" tag in music files doesn't really mean "album", it means "release", thus albums, EPs, singles etc are all covered. Thus, if the single name is used for album name as well as the track name then there's a chance bliss will find the artwork.

Nice idea! What I'm not sure about is whether there's enough data out there to make this worth its effort. What's your feeling on this having done it manually from Discogs?

The other thing is, at least for embedding artwork, you may have to choose which you'd prefer: album or single artwork. Some file formats only support one piece of art.

So I think you should vote for http://ideas.blisshq.com/forums/21939-bliss/suggestions/5746094-tag-correction-facility and add a comment about the heuristics to prefer older or "original" releases.

I'm surprised that doesn't have many votes. I think if it gains momentum it will be popular.

So shall we narrow this down to a way of ignoring albums depending on their title? E.g. specify a search string or regular expression to ignore albums?

An error occurred while saving the comment
AdminDan Gravell (Founder and programmer, bliss) commented  ·

Ok, as with the other thread, I wonder if we should distil this to one overarching idea.

It feels like you need tag correction/import which follows certain heuristics - one of these being "prefer earlier releases".

I don't understand your last paragraph... sorry!

An error occurred while saving the comment
AdminDan Gravell (Founder and programmer, bliss) commented  ·

"So in my opinion you have to start with no metadata. So what you got? Probably only, for example; Michael Jackson - Bad.mp3. So the first match should be to find the release year.
This should be the earliest date in relation with the artist name and track name. If the database is filled properly then it will come back with 1987 (same year as the Bad album).

So now we have artist name, track and release year. This should be enough to find the album name. After this we have also the right genre (if filled in of course) and the right art."

The year is related to the release on which the track appears. I suppose you could say that if there's no album name it may refer to the year first recorded. But the point is that you wouldn't decide on an album name due to a year, because the year is determined by when the album was released!

I agree that a lot of the time only the earliest date for a particular release is of interest. Note there's also specific 'original release date' fields in ID3 (TORY/TDOR).

AdminDan Gravell (Founder and programmer, bliss) commented  ·

Ok. You need to bear in mind that bliss is "release oriented" in that it concentrates on finding metadata for releases (albums, singles, EPs) rather than individual tracks. For instance, individual tracks can appear on many albums, so how do we know which album to assign it to?

We could of course introduce a "track oriented" approach, see:

    http://ideas.blisshq.com/forums/21939-bliss/suggestions/1871581-handle-folders-containing-singles
    http://ideas.blisshq.com/forums/21939-bliss/suggestions/2955833-find-artwork-for-singles-that-are-part-of-compilat

AdminDan Gravell (Founder and programmer, bliss) commented  ·

Thanks for this, and thanks for the debug archive you sent separately. So you basically want to ignore certain albums? I wouldn't want to add a blanket ignore for all albums of a given name for all users!

Can you give some example of the album names you'd want ignored?

Note it is possible to ignore files and folders from the scan as per: http://www.blisshq.com/music-library-management-blog/2011/08/16/new-release-20110809/

Or do you mean the album name shouldn't be used in the query for artwork... it should only be track name?

Yep, fair point. I think we should decide how to distil this to a more succinct idea because it feels to me like both of your ideas are requiring the same thing...

An error occurred while saving the comment
AdminDan Gravell (Founder and programmer, bliss) commented  ·

As in my answer to your other idea, the year tag is a result of the release if a release is specific in the ALBUM_NAME field. If it's "Bad" it should be 1987. If it's "Bad 25" it should be 2012.

It seems to me you need a wholesale tag correction approach that prefers original releases and tries to keep albums whole. But this might be difficult if the tracks are in different folders.

AdminDan Gravell (Founder and programmer, bliss) commented  ·

"In this situation it should be better that the script pulls them apart and treats them as singles, so I or the script can give them there own art and other meta data."

If the tags are correctly assigned it should do. In this case the tracks have been explicitly assigned to the album "80 Hits of the 80's" - http://musicbrainz.org/release/7f5c06bc-6165-4412-8992-c6891069654f .

Where did these tags come from in the first place?

"File not saved - other tracks in 1985,1988,1987,1989,1980 are from different albums.

I don't think it's wise (who am I to tell ??) to do a crosscountrytrackie over different directories. "

This is related to saving a cover.jpg in an album folder. bliss is not doing this, because the tracks in the album this relates to are in folders that have tracks from other albums in them.

I can see this in your debug archive - you have a lot of files in folders like "F:\Top 40 1980-Heden\1987\" for instance.

So I think bliss is doing what you want - *not* saving a file.

An error occurred while saving the comment
AdminDan Gravell (Founder and programmer, bliss) commented  ·

First, about the Michael Jackson - Bad.mp3 issue. You have two copies of this track, I assume the one you are interested in is the one within the album "Bad".

The tags for this particular file give the year as "1987". bliss groups all the tracks with the same album name together, and they share release year too.

There is also one track assigned to an album called "Bad 25" in the same folder. This is a track "Leave Me Alone" that's also normally part of "Bad". Is "Bad 25" the collection name you expected? If so, you need to assign "Bad 25" as the album name for each of the "Bad" tracks.

The fastest way to do that is to find "Bad", click it to see the album detail, then edit the name to "Bad 25" and click "Save". You can also use the "Tags" page.

I've sent you an invite to a Dropbox folder. Can you upload the archive there? I'll also take a look at your other issues, but they may require separate resolution.

Can you send me a debug archive so I can understand what the tags are currently? See http://www.blisshq.com/support/reporting-problems.html

In theory, bliss should be able to distinguish between different releases...
